![]() ![]() In her most recent book, Pythagorean Women Philosophers, she provides a comprehensive and systematic analysis of the available evidence for women in Pythagoreanism, with special focus on how these texts situate themselves in the Greek intellectual tradition and what picture of the Pythagorean female sage they convey. Dorota Dutsch is a leading expert in the study of gender in Greek and Roman antiquity (e.g., Dutsch 2008). Second, the letters and treatises ascribed to Pythagorean women between the second century bce and the second century ce are the first example of philosophical prose ascribed to female authors in Greek antiquity. There are two reasons why scholars studying women philosophers and women in Greco-Roman antiquity have recently taken an interest in Pythagoreanism: first, Pythagoras' female followers in the fifth century bce are the earliest documented example of female engagement with ancient Greek philosophy. ![]()
