Boxes are rigid, linear not curved, sharp where one might hope to slope, abrupt where one might want for softness. ![]() His whole world forcibly contained within this box. But in all other ways, the box metaphor, symbol, motif works well. ![]() In this I found myself frustrated by his outlook. For example, I felt at times, like in the poem on Cubism, that Amal’s referring to the other guys in jail as his corners was dismissive of their complexities, even as it became a term of endearment. This too, a form of visual art.īoxes are a strong symbol throughout this book, one I’ll be honest I do not always understand. ![]() But one of the joys of actually holding a poem in your hands, is mapping its terrain. How is white space utilized? How are lines spilling, or cutting or dropping off on the page? How do the letters look? These are so subtle, and not applicable in every poem, by any means. One of the things I like the best about poetry is thinking about its container… that is, the page. It takes on so many uses, occupies so many spaces. ![]()
